Will the Winter of 09/10 Lead to Winterkill
of Bermudagrass?

It’s been a long, cold winter. If you’re like me, I’m ready for some sunshine and warmer weather! And so is the turf. Normally, cool-season grass such as Fescue is greening up by now. And normally, winter weeds (which current LawnAmerica customers don’t have now) are starting to take over lawns. That’s just not the case now, but trust me—it’s coming.

I’ve received some information from the University of Arkansas turfgass department on the possibility of some winterkill from the harsh cold temperatures we’ve experienced at times. I was in the lawncare business with one of my previous businesses I owned, green-up!, in 1990, when we experienced the “mother of all winterkills.” It was awful! read more...

Don’t Forget to Water!

Your Step 1 pre-emergent needs to be watered into the soil with about 1/4" of moisture in order to activate. For best results, the pre-emergent needs to be watered in within about 5 days if no rainfall occurs.

March 2010 Lawn & Garden Tips
  • Cut down dormant ornamental grasses in your landscape to about a 4” level. This will allow them to regenerate quicker and become fuller during the growing season. If you live in the country, away from burning restrictions, you can even burn them down—just be careful!
  • Finish pruning shade trees, summer flowering shrubs and hedges. Spring blooming shrubs such as Azaleas may be pruned immediately after flowering, usually from late May through June.
  • Dormant oil should be applied to control mites, scale, and overwintering aphids on certain trees and shrubs, such as Euonymous. LawnAmerica can help with this.
  • Now is a good time to have a soil test done to check your soil pH level. LawnAmerica can help.

AT2010 Donation Update

As of March 1st, we have a total of about $34,000 raised towards our goal of $100,000 for our five local Tulsa charities. If you don’t know what this is all about, go to www.AT2010Tulsa.com, and you’ll learn about the journey that LawnAmerica President Brad Johnson will take across America for local charities—what we’ve named AT2010.

Brad is dusting off his old backpack (actually getting a new lightweight one) from his earlier days and backpacking the 2,175 miles of the Appalachian Trail, going from Georgia to Maine. It’s not just an adventure and a challenge for Brad, but it’s all for a great cause, in showing compassion to kids and families in the Tulsa community who need a little compassion.

We’re building support as we search for other customers, friends, and businesses who would like to join us on this compassionate journey, as we donate funds to these five special non-profits:

I also want to give props to our corporate sponsors, who have jumped in with initial donations to the AT2010. LawnAmerica is matching dollar for dollar everything that’s given, up to $50,000, so your donation will go farther. Go to www.AT2010Tulsa.com to make your on-line donation.
