We are currently wrapping up our Late Fall Weed-Control Treatment. This is a liquid pre and post-emergent herbicide, which controls winter weeds such as dandelions, henbit, chickweed, and annual bluegrass. Immediate watering is not necessary, but the pre-emergent does need to be watered into the soil at some point in order to be effective. Cool-season grass lawns, such as fescue and bluegrass, were treated with a granular fertilizer and a spot-treatment of liquid post-emergent herbicide. No pre-emergent is applied during fall to cool-season lawns in order not to harm new grass seedlings. |

1. Late fall and early winter is the ideal time to fertilize trees and shrubs in your landscape.
2. Lawn America offers a deep-root injection of liquid fertilizer into the root zone of your trees and shrubs. With this important service, your ornamentals will look and perform better next spring. Call our office for more information or request this service online. 3. Planting tulips and other spring-flowering bulbs is a great way to add early spring color to your beds and landscaping. We recommend NOT planting them in the turf itself, however; it prevents us from being able to apply your liquid weed-control treatment in those lawn areas. 4. Keep those leaves picked up this fall and early winter on a consistent basis! Heavy leaf accumulation on cool-season seedlings can suffocate tender seedlings. Heavy, damp leaves can also lead to possible turf disease in some areas, even during the winter months. |

The objective of pruning is to produce strong, healthy, attractive plants. By understanding how, when and why to prune, and by following a few simple principles, this objective can be achieved.
Why Prune? Pruning for safety (Fig. A) involves removing branches that could fall and cause injury or property damage, trimming branches that interfere with lines of sight on streets or driveways, and removing branches that grow into utility lines. Safety pruning can be largely avoided by carefully choosing species that will not grow beyond the space available to them, and have strength and form characteristics that are suited to the site. Pruning for health (Fig. B) involves removing diseased or insect-infested wood, thinning the crown to increase airflow and reduce some pest problems, and removing crossing and rubbing branches. Pruning can best be used to encourage trees to develop a strong structure and reduce the likelihood of damage during severe weather. Removing broken or damaged limbs encourage wound closure. Pruning for aesthetics (Fig. C) involves enhancing the natural form and character of trees or stimulating flower production. Pruning for form can be especially important on open grown trees that do very little self-pruning. There is a lot more information to learn about pruning trees that could not be contained in this newsletter. If you would like more information about pruning trees, click here to download a PDF file from the USDA Forest Service. It is 12 pages long and has more in-depth information that will help you. |

With our New Showcase Care Program, your lawn will be treated exclusively with specially formulated organically activated fertilizers, providing you with the best that Mother Nature has to offer. The organic humic acids constrained in these fertilizers will provide a stronger, healthier root system, leading to a stronger turf that is more tolerant of stress and disease, has better nutrient and water utilization, and has a greener color.
Combined with quality slow-release nitrogen and other soil nutrients, we will apply this special fertilizer monthly during the growing season, giving you the best lawn possible. Join these special organic/slow-release fertilizers with Primo growth regulator, and you will have a better looking lawn which grows slower and more consistently also. Mowing every 4-5 days will be a thing of the past! Your lawn will look and perform its best with mowings every two weeks, even during the heaviest part of the growing season. We can also provide many of our other valuable Lawn America optional services with our Monthly Showcase Care, such as insect & disease control, perimeter pest control, aeration, and tree & shrub care to name a few. We will then provide you with a coupon book with a consistent monthly fee for 12 months, allowing you to budget your lawn and landscape dollars over the entire year.
