Core Aeration

Core aeration is one of the most important cultural practices available for your lawn. Our aeration equipment removes thousands of small cores of soil from your lawn that are 2 inches deep and 4-5 inches apart. These cores will gradually dissolve back into the thatch, while leaving small holes that the turf roots can grow back into.

Benefits of Aeration

Want to know how core aeration can help your lawn? We can explain the process to you, as well as the many benefits you can expect to see. Aeration is beneficial because it:

  • Loosens compacted soil - Annual or semiannual aeration is recommended on lawns with heavy clay soils. Aeration will help loosen compacted or clay soils so that air, water, and nutrients can better penetrate into the soil's root zone.
  • Controls thatch - Thatch is a layer of under-composed stems, roots, and other plant parts on the top of the soil. This layer inhibits water, air, and fertilizer from moving into the root zone. Thatch is usually found on older lawns, which usually have low soil pH. It is also commonly found where excessive clippings have been consistently left on the lawn. Regular aeration mixes the soil cores into the thatch, therefore helping the thatch to break down naturally. Aeration also speeds up the decomposition process.
  • Reduces water runoff - By controlling thatch, loosening soil, and making thousands of small holes in your turf, water will be able to penetrate into the root zone much more easily, resulting in more efficient use of your irrigation.

Summer is a great time to aerate bermudagass and zoysiagrass lawns. Early fall is the best time for aeration on fescue turf, in conjunction with overseeding. Schedule a core aeration this summer, and you can save 50% on a treatment of our new organic soil amendment, Soil Builder, which is applied at the same time. With Soil Builder, your soil will benefit even more, helping to build your root system for a stronger, healthier turf that will better withstand the summer heat and water stress.
