Core aeration is one of the most important cultural practices available for your lawn. Our aeration equipment will remove thousands of small cores of soil from your lawn about 2" deep and about every 4"–5". These cores will gradually dissolve back into the thatch, while leaving small holes for turf roots to grow back into.
AERATION provides the following benefits for a home lawn:
Helps loosen compacted soil
Annual or semiannual aeration is recommended on lawns with heavy clay soils. Aeration will help loosen up compacted or clay soils so that air, water, and nutrients can penetrate into the root zone of the soil better.
Helps control thatch
Thatch is a layer of undecomposed stems, roots, and other plant parts on the top of the soil, which inhibits water, air, and fertilizer from moving into the root zone. Thatch is usually found on older lawns, with a low soil pH, and in situations where excessive clippings have consistently been left on the lawn. Regular aeration helps thatch break down naturally by mixing the soil cores into the thatch and speeding up decomposition.
Helps reduce water runoff
By controlling thatch, loosening up soil, and making thousands of small holes in your turf, water will be able to penetrate into the root zone much better, making more efficient use of your irrigation.
Tall Fescue Seeding / Ryegrass Overseeding
Tall fescue and Perennial Ryegrass are cool-season grasses which grow well in semi-shade areas and even in full sun with proper irrigation and mowing practices. As trees become larger, bermudagrass and zoysiagrass will thin out in areas that have too much shade. In these situations, tall fescue can be established by sod or seed and do well. If the area is too shaded, with little or no sunlight reaching the ground, even tall fescue will not grow well though. Ground cover, shade-loving ornamentals, or mulch may be your solution in this situation.
We provide fescue seeding and ryegrass overseeding in September and October. With a complete renovation, we will double-aerate your soil, sow a quality seed, apply a starter fertilizer and a special organic fertilizer, rake the seedbed, and leave you with detailed watering instructions. We will then return in about 3 weeks to check on the new seedlings and overseed any thin areas with more seed.
If your existing fescue is in decent condition and you just want to thicken up the thin areas, overseeding the lawn with fescue may be needed. You'll save money with this, since no aeration will be performed in conjunction with the service.
Our seeding service varies from $40 to $110 per 1000', depending upon the area seeded, condition of any existing turf, and if complete renovation is needed. Our minimum price is $110 for anything under 1000'. Larger areas priced less per square foot. Compared to sodding fescue, you'll save over 50% by seeding in the fall.
We try to give seeding estimates for all customers in need of fescue seeding with their fall fertilizations done in August or September. You can also call our office and we'll be glad to send someone out to look at your lawn and make recommendations.
